Ryan Lewis

Ryan Lewis is a graphic designer, animator, artist, type designer, and design educator based in Kalamazoo, MI. Ryan's animations have been juried into more than 75 regional, national, and international exhibitions and festivals at venues such as Minneapolis College of Art & Design, UMASS Boston, MICA Place in Baltimore, RedLine Contemporary Art Center in Denver, Indianapolis Art Center, Manifest Gallery in Cincinnati, the South Bend Museum of Art, Urban Institute of Contemporary Art (UICA) in Grand Rapids, CICA Museum in Gimpo-si, Gyeonggi-do, South Korea, the XVI Festival Transterritorial de Cine Underground in Argentina, the International Motion Festival in Cyprus, and Videomedeja at the Museum of Contemporary Art of Vojvodina, Novi Sad, Serbia. Ryan is an associate professor of Graphic Design at Western Michigan University’s Gwen Frostic School of Art. At WMU, Ryan has taught courses in color, handmade books, letterpress printing, advanced design problem solving, typography and senior design research projects. Before joining the Frostic School of Art, he taught design courses at the School of Art + Design at Ohio University as a teaching assistant and as a guest lecturer at Marietta College in Ohio. In professional practice, Ryan has worked at the Ohio University Voinovich School of Leadership and Public Affairs as a web and information designer for grant-funded energy, economic and environmental projects. Previously, he also worked as a graphic designer, interactive designer, and senior designer for the dental software division of the Fortune 500 Company Henry Schein, Inc. in Utah. Ryan earned a Master of Fine Arts degree from the School of Art + Design at Ohio University, Athens and a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Utah State University where he also attended the Summer Design Academy in Leysin, Switzerland.
