Beneath is a visceral and haunting dance film that dives into the hidden depths of anxiety and depression — the emotions we suppress, the thoughts we fear, and the silent battles we fight. Through a powerful fusion of contemporary aerial movement, evocative imagery, and raw emotion, the film tells the story of a woman who appears whole on the surface, but beneath lies a monstrous presence — a manifestation of her inner turmoil. In a pivotal moment, she sits before a flawless mirror, her form bathed in cool, shadow-dappled light. As she lifts her hand to touch her reflection she realized she doesn’t recognize the face anymore. She peers over the top edge of the glass, as if searching the shadows above for answers. In that instant, the mirror’s surface bursts into flame—heat glints off the smooth glass, and fiery tongues dance along its edges. The monster isn’t lurking behind her; it’s the self consumed by fire, the image she’s betrayed by her own mind. As the woman moves through shifting landscapes of isolation, resistance, and vulnerability, the “monster” grows more tangible, shadowing her every step. Her choreography becomes a battleground: each climb a defiance of the fire’s roar, each fall a surrender to the weight of her own mind. But is this beast to be feared — or is it the key to her own awakening? Beneath is not just a journey through mental illness, but a testament to resilience: the fierce courage it takes to face the flames of your inner darkness, and to emerge renewed on the other side.
