In the first days of the war, Ganna Yarovenko, her two children, and her mother, Nina, escape under Russian gunfire from a Kyiv suburb to safety in Poland. Amidst the chaos, they find refuge with Polish musicians Kaja and Janusz Prusinowski. Despite the language barrier, Ganna and Kaja form a deep friendship, organizing a community center for refugee children to cope with the tragedy of war through art, and helping Ganna deal with her own loss and trauma. Ganna’s family is torn by war. While Nina paints flowers in Mława, Ganna’s father Petro refuses to leave his land near Bucha, surviving the Russian occupation and stubbornly working in his garden. Five-year-old Malva adapts to Poland, but her teenage brother Orest struggles with loneliness. Meanwhile, Malva's father Yaroslav, a renowned folk musician, promises to reunite with them during a music festival in Poland organized by the Prusinowskis, but men are rarely allowed to leave Ukraine during the war. Can the Ukrainian family, separated by war, finally reunite? How far will two women—Kaja and Ganna—joined by war and music, go to protect their families in the face of evil? Mama’s Voice is both a testament to the unyielding strength of women and a deeply personal exploration of the impact of war on family and community. It’s also a reflection on the connection to the motherland—of those who left, those who stayed, and the bonds that hold us together.
