The film essay, ‘DAYS IN WINTER’, is a fictional reconstruction of a real event. It delves into the mind of the main protagonist as he plans his own demise. By the Kollective Soziales Geräusch (2021-24). The film addresses the subject of suicide, illustrating its complexities through the psychological, social, and economic contexts embodied by the main protagonist’s thoughts. By revealing the multi-layered nature of the subject matter, Days in Winter brings mental health topics to the forefront of public discussion, increasing awareness and empathy, reducing prejudice, and promoting social integration. It invites the audience to reflect on the tensions between the act of dying and the act of suicide, as well as the dilemmas between the sense of social responsibility and self-autonomy. By doing so, the film-essay aims to destigmatize mental health issues by encouraging the audience, and those individuals affected by such struggles, to perceive suicide as a symptom of psychological illness—to be openly discussed, supported, and integrated for a successful path of recovery. Theassociative environments created in the film—intertwining real-life situations with the protagonist’s memories and thoughts—set the emotional framework underlying moments of struggle. The soundtrack is a mélange of spoken thoughts materialized by the voices of a mezzo-soprano and a bass-baritone, a breath choir and elements of musique concrète. The diary entries and thoughts are presented as a fictional narrative. With the support of medical experts during its production, the film benefits from a solid professional foundation, blending sociological insight with creative expression.
