Sara Nunes

Sara Nunes was born in 1985 in Lisbon. She obtained a Master's degree in Architecture in 2009 from the Escola Superior Artística do Porto and the Universität Kassel (Germany). She worked for two years in Madrid as an architect (2011-2012) at the Ensamble Studio atelier. In Madrid, she developed a passion for cinema and, in 2013, returned to Portugal, where she founded a film production company focused on architecture: BUILDING PICTURES (www.buildingpictures.pt), producing over 300 short films until 2021. In 2022, she premiered the documentary “WoodStories” at Casa da Arquitetura (Porto), available on the streaming platform “Caixa Forum+”. The film features architects Carlos Azevedo, Diogo Aguiar, Diogo Zenha Morais, Francisco Vieira de Campos, Graça Correia, João Luís Carrilho da Graça, João Mendes Ribeiro, Laura Lupini, Luís Sobral, and Manuel Aires Mateus. The documentary was selected by festivals in Tokyo, Turkey, Sweden, Brazil, and Hungary, and won the Loop Design Awards. In June 2023, she premiered the documentary “De Volta à Cidade” at Cinema Batalha, about the rehabilitation of the most important market in Porto: Mercado do Bolhão, and how this building has positively impacted traders, users, and the city. It was selected by film festivals in Bulgaria and Greece. In May 2024, she received the Innovation in Architecture Award at the Serralves Museum Auditorium from the Forma awards. Sara Nunes is working on high-profile cinematic projects, including the documentary "O Primeiro Siza", which explores Álvaro Siza Vieira's first work and has just had its pre-premiere at the Serralves Museum. In addition to this, she is developing the documentary "In the Age of Cities", which offers a vision of the future of cities, featuring architects, artists, and designers such as Ana Aragão, Gilles Retsin, Guta Moura Guedes, Iñaqui Carnicero, Mario Cucinella, and OODA. She is also working on the film "The Flying Photographer", about architectural photographer Fernando Guerra, and has recently begun developing a documentary about Eduardo Souto de Moura. In October 2024, Sara began her PhD in Architecture Communication at the Faculty of Architecture of Madrid (ETSAM).
