MY FRIEND IS A HU GUI (INTERNATIONAL VERSION)

This is exactly the kind of short I love seeing at festivals — poetic, compact, and filled with cultural layers. Would love to know more about the folklore behind Hu Gui.

I liked the fox-girl! She was mysterious but cool. Also, fireworks are always a win. I wish it was longer though.

That was sweet and kinda magical! I liked the fireworks part, it felt warm and touching. I didn’t get everything about the spirit part, but it still felt special.

I noticed the subtle cloth simulations on the spirit character and the lighting work during the fireworks — very clean for a short. The character rigging on the girl is especially expressive.

My Friend is a Hu Gui’ is a soft-spoken parable on acceptance and wonder. The animation style, while modest in rendering, finds strength in composition and emotional framing.

Ancient spirits, magical lakes, glowing skies — YES PLEASE. I’d watch a whole series about Hu Gui and the girl exploring the world together.

The blending of Chinese folklore aesthetics with European-style 3D animation creates a fascinating hybrid. The restrained color grading in the real world vs. the saturated fantasy scenes cleverly reflects the emotional duality of the protagonist.
