A mysterious creature was spotted by children in the waters of Lake Neusiedl in the 1970s. For years, local rumours linked it to strange accidents and unexplained events – until the story was forgotten. Half a century later, two filmmakers pick up the trail and find a woman who claims to have filmed the creature – and who, surprisingly, still lives with it today. But the monster isn’t cooperative at all: it’s far from terrifying, instead highly phlegmatic, and it refuses to speak. The documentary collapses. And the horror film they try to make instead slowly turns into something else.

REVIEWS:

The scene where Maria asks which word to emphasize is gold. It’s a perfect deconstruction of bad directing. The actress playing Maria is magnificent in her deadpan delivery next to that pile of hair.

Christopher Olson

The meta-layer here is great. The film explores documentary ethics: how we sculpt reality. The moment where they force Maria to overact her lines ("I've never tried to talk to him") shows just how fake on-screen "truth" can be.

Olivia Martinez

Too slow. The monster is phlegmatic, and so is the film. They just argue about how to shoot a scene. I was waiting for it to eat someone, but it just sat there.

Alfonso Triana

A witty deconstruction of the genre. The film cleverly balances between a fairytale and a satire on filmmaking.

Alicia Martinez Garcia

I love the Brute's design. It's practical effects, old school! It looks ridiculous and realistic at the same time, especially when sitting at the table. No CGI, just tons of hair and slime.

Daniele Palomeque

A very unusual and fun film. It really surprised me, and more than once. The transitions from documentary to mysticism and then to horror go through absurd surrealism with humor. The paddle, that was just cool. All in all, I was impressed. Thank you!

Did you notice the ending? Where did they all go?. The crew vanished, leaving only the camera. Maybe the Brute isn't so harmless after all? There is a subtle, creepy subtext there.

Emily Turner

This is brilliant satire! A monster that just sits there like a wet flannel eating cookies while the directors try to turn it into a horror star. It's hilarious. Reminds me of What We Do in the Shadows, but with an Austrian twist.

Agustin Beylin

I came for the creature on the poster, but got 19 minutes of talking. "This will never be a horror film", they say in the scene. Well, they are right. The suit looks like a pile of dirty wool, and I wasn't scared for a second.
