Helen died when a peace ritual she’d staged to help end the Vietnam War went horribly wrong. Her boyfriend, Jack, blamed her death on violent campus radicals, and went to work for Siegel, a shadowy government figure, infiltrating and arresting them. 10 years later now, and the violent Left has been mostly silenced. In a group he infiltrates, Jack falls for Debra, who he does not believe had a violent past herself. He runs off with her to Homer, a small Upstate New York town near the campus where Helen died. Siegel won't find them there, and he plans to say a final goodbye to Helen – they'd planned to rendezvous in 10 years if no longer together -- and begin a new life with Debra. But in Homer he learns Helen did not die as he'd thought, that Debra may not be who he thinks, and that Siegel, desperate as he slowly dies from longterm effects of Agent Orange exposure, will not let him retire without turning over Debra. Jack's investigation leads him back into a witches' brew of horror: who Debra really was, the machinations of the violent Left, the supernatural side to Helen's peace rite, a campus military lab tapping into lost and deadly human abilities -- and the terrible role Jack may have played in all of this.
