The film uses the olive tree to represent women, and while the story progresses between Germany and Turkey, the threat faced by the olive groves is a metaphor for violence against women. As events unfold between a Turkish and a German family linked by marriage, an intimate and touching story of family bonds is brought into relief by two siblings discovering just how vast the precipice between crime and punishment could be. Tuba is a Turkish woman living in Germany with her husband Daniel; they visit Turkey every year along with their three children for the olive harvest. This year, they are in danger of losing their olive grove, and they find out certain facts about Tuba’s brother Tolga, who suffers from bipolar disorder. Tuba and Daniel are forced to make important decisions to save Tuba’s family. The film explores rural life through different perspectives and from the eyes of different generations and cultures as a family searches for solutions for their cross-cultural problems.
